Most of the teams that BEFF work with are involved in championing issues for their community. For them, the Suara process enables them to create a visual and compelling interface to communicate their side of the story and engage their target stakeholders. The storylines are diverse. They range from historical cultures of indigenous communities, personal stories of overcoming hardships, to complex issues that threaten the ecological and cultural resilience of these communities and the environments they live in. Several teams, particularly those at the intermediate level, are now actively producing high quality short films that carry the voices of their communities to engage audiences all over in dialogue and bridge our understanding of the challenges communities face in seeking sustainable solutions for their people and the environments they live in.

THE SUARA COMMUNITY FILMMAKING PROGRAMME is Borneo Eco Film Festival's flagship training programme that supports Indigenous and local communities living in rural areas to make short films about their people and the environments they live in using their own images and in their own voice. SUARA aim is to harness the power of film and storytelling to enable communities to tell their side of the story and compel action for a shared sustainable future. Since Borneo Eco Film Festival inception in 2011, the Suara Programme has trained more than 200 Indigenous and local community participants and their partners from across Malaysia. In Sabah, BEFF participants represent the marine, coastal, riverine, interior lowland and highland peoples who have been interacting with their land- and sea-scapes for generations.
